Orchestra Nova Announces 2009-2010 Season
Building upon the excitement surrounding its new name and new venue, Orchestra Nova San Diego (formerly the San Diego Chamber Orchestra), under the leadership of artistic director and conductor Jung-Ho Pak, is announcing its 2009-2010 season with a line-up of concerts that are sure to capture the hearts and minds of San Diegans of all generations.
Continuing its innovative spirit, the orchestra will be conducting a first-ever regional star search for “the next classical music superstar.” Semi-finalists will perform during the March concert. Loosely modeled after American Idol, audience members and Internet users will be the judges.
The first concert of the season, The Many Faces of Mozart, will feature the orchestra’s principal guest artist Lindsay Deutsch, returning to play with the orchestra after her triumphant debut with the orchestra in 2007. The concert will focus on Mozart’s many talents, performing Three German Dances, Violin Concerto No. 3 and the beloved Symphony No. 40. The season will end with CSI: Beethoven – Inside Ludwig’s Head, a rare look at the inner workings of Beethoven’s creative mind through an exploration of his three Leonore overtures, the Fidelio Overture and Symphony No. 4.
Now in its 26th year and focusing on a bright future, the orchestra’s vision of providing “the next generation of the classical music experience” through innovative programming, beautiful music and a total high-quality customer experience that begins with the purchase of a ticket and lasts through the last note of a concert will be expanded even more during this season.
By almost any measurement, Maestro Pak’s third season with the orchestra was a stunning success. Concertgoers were wildly enthusiastic, the musicians were excited as reflected by their obvious connection to the guests during performances and while mingling with guests before and after the concerts (a first in the San Diego area), and ticket sales and revenue were stronger than ever, with many concerts sold out. Adding to the excitement building around the orchestra, a major ground-breaking education program, the Frances Hunter Music Memory Program, involving thousands of students and teachers throughout the county, was kicked off last fall.
The orchestra has also announced that, in addition to performing at St. Paul’s Cathedral downtown and the Sherwood Auditorium in La Jolla, it will perform its 2009-2010 Classics Series at the state-of-the-art Irwin M. Jacobs Qualcomm Hall in Sorrento Valley. This concert hall has nearly perfect acoustics and high-tech audio and video capabilities, in addition to extraordinarily comfortable seating and convenient parking.
