Orchestra Nova: Celebrations Documentary Selected for Asian Film Festival
The highly acclaimed documentary Orchestra Nova: Celebrations , produced by UCSD-TV, has been selected for a showing at the Asian Film Festival on Tuesday, October 20, 7:15 p.m., at Hazard Center 's UltraStar Theatre. The showing is free and open to the public.
The orchestra's artistic director and conductor, Jung-Ho Pak, and the documentary producer, UCSD-TV's John Menier, will participate in a discussion with audience members onstage after the showing. A post-show reception for audience members in the theatre lobby will be hosted by Maestro Pak and the orchestra after the discussion.
The documentary, a revealing “behind-the-scenes” look at one of the most adventurous and innovative orchestras in the music world today, has been in development for over a year. It looks at how this unique ensemble is helping to change the face of classical music, with its creative approach to music-making and running a business. It focuses on the way their changes affect everything from how the musicians and staff feel about themselves to how Maestro Pak and the orchestra is radicalizing the impact of the arts, using a personal approach to innovative programming, entrepreneurial business models and technology.
With arts organizations struggling to find a new audience in a difficult economy, the documentary reflects one orchestra's journey as it forges a new path to success. Based upon insightful interviews with musicians, staff and board members, the doumentary offers viewers a rare glimpse into the potential future of classical music. Several performances of Orchestra Nova in concert are featured, including music from Mozart, Tchaikovsky and Ravel to Handel's Messiah and selections featuring authentic Asian instruments.
The documentary also describes the “behind-the-scenes” reasoning for the orchestra's new name (Orchestra Nova - formerly the San Diego Chamber Orchestra) and new concert hall (the Irwin M. Jacobs Qualcomm Hall) announced in May 2009.
