Support Our Education Programs

Education

This is our dream.

We at Orchestra Nova San Diego have several groundbreaking programs that are part of our Every Child, Every Life philosophy.  This means that all of our programs must profoundly enrich a student's appreciation and understanding for music in their life.  This is an ambitious and unique goal, but we have specific programs that will accomplish this dream.

The Hunter Family Music Memory Program
This nationally recognized program that has become a phenomenon across the country made its debut in San Diego County with the orchestra in September 2008.  Acclaimed in dozens of cities around the country, Music Memory gives children in the 3rd through 6th grades the opportunity to learn 16 pieces of classical music each year. This means that when a student completes four years of this program, they will be able to identify and appreciate 64 pieces of classical music! They will also all have the chance to come to a live concert given by the orchestra, where they will be tested on their knowledge and receive awards for their hard work. The next Music Bee is May 22, 2012.

Take 5 for Music
Complementing the Hunter Family Music Memory Program is the newest of our extensive music education outreach programs Take 5 for Music, designed to introduce young people to great works of classical music. Using a series of CDs and a script that is read by the teacher, principal or fellow student over the school audio system, pieces of music are played at the same time each day, five days a week, throughout the school year.

The program was tested in the San Diego Unified School District early this year and is now in the process of being implemented in elementary and middle schools where there is no music specialist.

Tickets for an opportunity drawing to win a concert poster are sold at each Nova Classics concert this season to raise funds to add schools to the program ($300 per school). Four new schools have been funded as a result of the opportunity drawings.

Tune-up Festivals
The orchestra, in conjunction with the California Music Educators Association, presents the country’s only school orchestra festival with master classes from a professional conductor and professional musicians.  Each year during the month of March, Maestro Jung-Ho Pak and principal members of the orchestra work intensively with teachers and their students to help them grow stronger as conductors and musicians.

$10 Tickets for Students and Educators
Orchestra Nova is proud to announce one of the most accessible student prices in the city. For only $10, any student (including enrolled college students with current student I.D.) can purchase tickets for each Nova Classics concert.

And this year we’ve added $10 tickets for educators.

Buy early as these tickets are based upon availability.
