Maria Lozano
Maria never had a music lesson before her senior year in college, but she always loved to sing and has fond memories of her father listening to the opera on KPBS from his home in Ensenada, Mexico, every Sunday, his only day off during the week.
After high school in Ensenada, she moved to Mexico City where she joined the Mexican Navy and sang with the Navy chorus for three years.
At her father’s urging, Maria studied engineering for three years at Baja California University before she told him that “music, not engineering, is my thing” and began taking a 9-hr. round-trip bus ride every day to study voice at San Diego State University. After 1 ½ years, she received her B.A. degree in music, studying with Mary MacKenzie.
She subsequently moved to San Diego and is studying for a graduate degree in music, continuing her studies with renowned voice teacher Mary MacKenzie. Noted opera singer Carol Nesbitt hailed her “incredible voice as a gift” while conducting a master class in which Maria was a participant.
Her dream: to perform with orchestras and in opera wherever that takes her, but always coming back to her home base, San Diego, and eventually teaching. |
